Kate Mason was an English teacher at Lincoln High. She died from ovarian cancer on September 12, 2007 after she retired. LPS made a memorial arts scholarship dedicated to Ms. Mason in 2008. She was involved on the board of the Lincoln Arts Council. Ms. Mason believed in encouraging creativity in students to help them with their learning. “She was a wacky teacher that was good with kids,” said Media Specialist Paula McClung.

Ms. Maon also assisted with special education students by taking them to the Wheat Lab at UNL. She taught students how to count by using the kernels of wheat at the lab. Ms. Mason wanted her students to be independent and she tried very hard (and often succeeded) by using non-traditional techniques such as using hands-on lessons and incorporating the arts into her lessons.
