Walking down the halls of LHS everyday, you see a variety of different styles, varying anywhere
from hip-hop to preppy. But there is one thing that all of these different styles seem to have in common. Chuck Taylors.
“They’re really comfortable and they fit the feet well,” LHS junior Michael Staley said.

Chuck Taylors are named after the famous basketball clinic host Charles “Chuck” Taylor, who was also a shoe salesman. Taylor was known for wearing “Chucks” at his clinics. He marketed them as basketball shoes and they immediately became a “must have” item. Roughly 750 million pairs later, Chuck Taylors are now the most sold basketball shoe in history.

One aspect of Chuck Taylors that makes them so popular and unique, is the fact that they come in so many different colors and styles.

“I have seven pairs,” sophomore Tea Ilic said. “I have red ones, black ones, yellow ones, dark green ones and purple ones.”
“I have a pair of money chucks,” LHS junior Jose Lemus said. “They have one hundred dollar bills designed all over them.”
Chuck Taylors are also fairly cheap for modern day shoes. “Mine were $40 each,” says Staley.

Most popular shoes these days are very expensive, generally costing around one hundred dollars, per pair.
Although they look good and are very fashionable, Chuck Taylors can also serve some very practical functions. “I have a very low arch,” senior Nyameer Puok said. “They seem to be the only shoe that will support it.”

“They’re really good for drumming because they provide balance,” Staley said. Staley plays the snare drum on Lincoln High’s drum line.
From the mid 1980s through the early 2000s, Chuck Taylors seemed to have a huge fashion drop off. You would never see people wearing them.
Around the year 2006, “Chucks” remerged into the social scene, big time. Today, they are worn and endorsed by many stars including Lil’ Wayne, Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, and Chris Brown, among many others.

Wiz Khalifa likes “Chucks” so much, that he named his rap group “The Taylor Gang.” They’re named that, because they all wear Chuck Taylors. He even has a song titled: “Dang it feels good to be a Taylor. “

Chuck Taylors are one of the most common fashion items of the 21st century. They seem to go with any clothing style, and because
of it, they are very popular. Yes, “Chucks” are truly back.
