Lincoln High volleyball players took over Johnson Gym Friday October 28th and raised $1,500 for breast cancer research.

“Links Dig Pink” was a student-initiated and student -un volleyball fundraiser for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.  Lincoln High junior Caitlin Holman brought about this idea.

“I created the event Links Dig Pink in October of last year.” Holman said. “I got the idea while watching Monday night football and seeing the players show their support for breast cancer awareness by wearing pink apparel like shoes, gloves, hats, etc.  I thought it would be great if the volleyball team could do something to support the cause as well,” Holman added.

Last year when the event took place they raised a little over $1,000. With the help of Lincoln High junior Cheyanna Kempel, Holman sold shirts, sweatshirts, buttons and magnets all to raise money for the cause. Local businesses also donated money.

“This year we took a lot more time to get ready, we had parents help which took a lot of pressure off of us and then we were able to get other people to help too,” Kempel explained. “So everything happened kind of fast, then it all built from that.” Kempel continued. “Cheerleaders helped us a lot, Pomalinks promoted, and we had clubs promote like Girls L Club,” Kempel added.

Freshmen first played Reserve then Junior Varsity played Varsity with performances by the Cheerleaders and the Pomalinks.

The cheerleaders wore the shirts that were sold for the event. The Freshman Cheerleaders cheered for the Freshman vs. Reserve game wearing the black Links Dig Pink shirts with a pink ribbon. Following, the Junior Varsity and Varsity Cheerleaders cheered for the Junior Varsity vs. Varsity game wearing the hot pink Links Dig Pink shirts with pink ribbons.

The Reserve team defeated the Freshmen, and Varsity defeated the  Junior Varsity team.

Holman was very pleased with the results hoping for it to be even better next year.
