All Lincoln High students know what stress is, and have felt it at least once in their life. Whether it be caused by school scenes or problems with friends, we can all relate to anxiety.

“When we can’t enjoy our friends and life because the stress is interfering it becomes a problem,” school social worker, Sue Dutton said.

Many things can cause teens and people of all ages to be stressed. Stressors can vary greatly in many ways. From sports injuries to drama among friends, all of those things can cause stress. Anxiety and stress is the most common mental health disorder in America. More people are stressed than anything,” Dutton said. Stressors include job demands, relationship conflicts, and a hectic schedule.

For people on an overdose of stress constantly, there are ways to avoid and alleviate it. Some ways are simple, while others take some planning ahead of time. Lowering personal expectations, asking others to assist with problems, along with having supportive relationships are ways to lower stress.

Teachers and parents can help with the anxiety of students. Listen to what the student is trying to say, be patient with them, and try to limit the stress being put on students when possible according to Kidshealth.org. “ Allow a student to observe the task that is going to be done. Show them what the task is, allow them to see what’s going to be done. Let students know that you care and that you understand, ” Dutton said.

There are no ways to avoid stress completely, but luckily we need some stress in life. Without stress we wouldn’t be able to get through ad situations sometimes. But, then there are times we stress out for small reasons. For those times we have trusted friends, teachers, parents, and the rest of the Lincoln High staff to support us.
