Candidates sound off on Immigration

Candidates sound off on Immigration

By Grant Witthoff –

Every day people from outside the United States enter without documents to get away from the country they are currently in. Many of these people are scared, living in horrible conditions, or fleeing repressive governments. They are looking for a better life for their families. One country that is always in the news for undocumented immigration is Mexico. Although it has beautiful landscapes and is a popular place for tourists to visit, there are locations where people are desperate to leave causing them to find ways into the United States illegally.

One of the biggest places that immigration is in debate are the U.S presidential elections, and while they the election is still quite a ways away, the opinion on immigration is one of the factors that sway people’s support of a certain candidate. In black and white you can see that a liberal approach towards immigration is more about legalizing, and allowing people to come through legally while a more conservative approach is keeping people from illegally entering the states out, and going through a process to become legalized. You can see that in each of the perspectives each candidate almost has their own place on the left or right scale. For example, Donald Trump wants to build a wall around the border, and deport all of the undocumented immigrants out of the United States, so you can see he would be on the very far right side of the scale whereas Hillary Clinton believes that if fines, and back taxes are paid, as well as meeting certain requirements, that all of the currently illegal immigrants should be granted citizenship, you can see that that is along the very left side of the scale, with the other six candidates, ending up somewhere between the two. On these pages you can see at a glance where each of the candidates stands on this issue.

With that being said, Lincoln High is one of the most diversified schools in Lincoln Nebraska, and because of that, there are a lot of different, cultures, religions, races, and opinions. One opinion that seemingly varies between people is Immigration.
