The Homecoming game and dance this year at Northeast is just a few days away. You know what that means…spirit week! The week of fun themes where you got to dress up and be silly, you can’t do that very often in school. It was during the last week before fall break, and a great way to end the first quarter of this school year.

Since the cheerleaders usually think up the spirit week themes, by either pure creativity or a little social media, I spoke to rocket cheerleader Alyssa Bennett, to find out a little more about spirit week. According to Bennett, “The purpose of spirit week is to get kids to be more involved in the school and have fun while doing it; it’s also to get them excited about homecoming.”

This year’s spirit week, a 3 day week before fall break, consisted of Movie Character Monday, Twin Tuesday, and Rocket Pride Wednesday. It  all leads up to the Homecoming game and the dance on Friday which is themed Sock Hop.

On Monday the spirit was evident. Students strutted through the halls dressed as anything from superheroes, minions, and harry potter to beloved childhood movie characters like Darla, the crazed fish killer from Finding Nemo, with her headgear and pigtails.

However on Tuesday, students were twinning with their friends or siblings. Even actual twins were taking advantage and dressing identically and unrecognisably from each other.

On the final day, students were decked out in black and white. Many people wore Northeast apparel and some even tutus or some creepy makeup. When asked what her favorite spirit week theme has been so far, Bennett said, “I think movie character has always been my favorite.”

The winners for the best dressed contest have been declared. The winners are Brady Pham for Monday, Carrie Keating and Yasmeen Elkurd for Tuesday, and Nick Fullerton for Wednesday.

Bennett agrees that spirit week works, “Kids get so excited for it and it’s super fun to watch everyone go all out.”
